What is Job Interview?

A job interview is an interview that consists of a conversation between a job applicant and an employer representative that takes place to assess whether the applicant should be hired. Interviews are one of the most widely used devices for employee selection.

Interviews vary to the extent that the questions are structured, from a completely unstructured and free conversation, to a structured interview in which the applicant is asked for a predetermined list of questions in a specific order; Structured interviews are often more accurate predictors of which applicants will be suitable employees, according to research studies.

A job interview generally precedes the hiring decision. The interview is usually preceded by evaluating the resumes submitted by interested candidates, possibly by examining job applications or reading many resumes. Then, after this selection, a small number of interview candidates are selected.

Possible job interview opportunities also include networking events and career fairs. The job interview is considered one of the most useful tools for evaluating potential employees. It also requires significant employer resources, but has been shown to be notoriously unreliable in identifying the optimal person for the job. An interview also allows the candidate to assess the corporate culture and the demands of the job.

Multiple rounds of job interviews and / or other candidate selection methods can be used when there are many candidates or the job is particularly challenging or desirable. The previous rounds, sometimes called “screening interviews,” may involve fewer employer staff and will generally be much shorter and less comprehensive.

An increasingly common initial interview approach is the telephone interview. This is especially common when candidates do not live near the employer and have the advantage of keeping costs low for both parties. Since 2003, interviews have been conducted through video conferencing software, such as Skype.

Once all the candidates have been interviewed, the employer generally selects the most desirable candidates and begins the negotiation of a job offer.
